Educational Psychology

Educational Psychology is dedicated to evaluating and intervening in education issues and the teaching-learning process, as well as promoting the effectiveness of study through the promotion of educational strategies.

Since the Educational Psychologist aims to enhance learning and eliminate barriers to it, his field of action covers the entire life cycle and is aimed at various recipients, with direct or indirect intervention in educational processes, among the which: students and trainees (children, youth, adults), teachers and/or trainers, families, multidisciplinary team and communities. Here, the psychologist will have, in any of these contexts, the hard task of creating bridges between psychological knowledge and educational practice, ensuring that their intervention produces desirable and expected changes in the student.

Therefore, its intervention can be promotional, preventive and remedial, and its general objective is to develop students’ abilities and skills, promoting contexts that facilitate learning and the development of personal, social and professional skills. Acting in the most diverse situations (Learning difficulties; Dyslexia; Vocational Guidance; Cognitive Stimulation; Training of study methods and learning strategies; Anxiety management in specific evaluation moments) and in tune with all contexts, they develop strategies in order to make the learning process more meaningful and effective. It also focuses on motivation and learning difficulties, thus focusing its action not only on the student’s needs in the school context, but also on other areas where school/educational psychology has an impact.

The main objective is therefore the prevention of problems as well as intervention when necessary, in order to minimize the intensity of symptoms and even their resolution, with consequent academic success.

The competences and multiplicity of functions of Educational Psychologists, who act as agents of change, highlight the importance of educational contexts and contribute to the effectiveness of the services provided by schools. Educational Psychology is transversal to all ages, since education and learning are continuous methods that accompany human beings throughout their lives.
