Clinical Psychology is a scientific area dedicated to the mental health of individuals and works on various pathologies, with emotional, behavioral and/or cognitive repercussions (e.g. depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, grief, among others). This area uses methods of assessment, diagnosis, monitoring, prevention and psychological intervention, such as psychotherapy or psychological support, in order to promote psychological adjustment and well-being.
The World Health Organization defines health as a state of physical, mental and social well-being. Like the body, the mind may also need the help of a specialized technician who can diagnose a problem and establish techniques to promote a healthier life.
In this way, Clinical Psychology becomes fundamental in the development of skills that contribute to the improvement of the individual’s mental health. This is a scientific area dedicated to the mental health of individuals and working on cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects, including methods of assessment, diagnosis, monitoring, prevention and psychological intervention.
Clinical Psychology is aimed at children, teenagers, adults and the elderly, and if necessary, it can intervene in couples and families or in groups.
Thus, Clinical Psychology is decisive in issues such as:
Anxiety;
Mood disorders (depression);
Phobias and fears;
Post-traumatic stress;
Adaptation disorders (life transitions such as: school/professional integration, divorce, adoption, bereavement, chronic illness…);
Neurodevelopmental disorders (developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, Asperger syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, cognitive delay, learning disorders);
Behavior disorders (challenge/opposition, disruptive behavior disorder);
Interpersonal relationship difficulties;
Eating disorders;
personality disorders;
Obsessive-compulsive disorder;
Vocational orientation;
Elimination disorders (enuresis, encopresis);
Sleep disturbances;
Psychotic disorders (schizophrenia);
In a therapeutic context, the Clinical Psychologist seeks to develop processes that respect the individuality of each person with a personalized treatment plan. It is important to emphasize that, when clinical intervention is aimed at the youngest, it is crucial to also integrate the adults who surround them (parents, teachers and educators), giving them tools to be an integral part in solving the problem and in supporting the child or adolescent. When the intervention is aimed at the elderly, in addition to clinical intervention, the psychologist also provides family guidance, in order to positively contribute to improving the individual’s quality of life.
Our clinical unit has professionals specialized in this type of clinical picture.
